We had an engaging session on hashtag#ESG Governance, led by Ms. Pooja Shukla — an accomplished Senior Lecturer, Lawyer, and Company Secretary qualified in Hong Kong, the UK, and India, with over fifteen years of experience in corporate governance.
Ms. Shukla brought the topic to life through compelling case studies and real-world illustrations. One striking discussion centered on the Disney Board of Directors, where she unpacked the internal employee revolt, the ensuing management decisions that precipitated a shareholder-led lawsuit, and the critical lessons drawn from the court’s final ruling. She underscored the imperative for board directors to conduct their own due diligence, emphasizing that accountability cannot be delegated — even to the Company Secretary.
Ms. Shukla offered a global perspective on governance, highlighting how boardroom culture differs across countries and societies, and how evolving government policies influence ESG priorities. She also demonstrated how companies are effectively integrating ESG into their business strategies to boost profitability — citing Apple’s streamlined packaging and hotels’ linen reuse practices as standout examples of sustainable innovation in action.
